About Us

DH Automotive is a family- and veteran-owned auto repair shop that has proudly served Saint Marys, OH, and the surrounding communities for over 45 years. Our story began in 1973 when Darrell “DH” Hertenstein Sr., following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service, opened a small one-bay car repair shop. Through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to quality, DH Automotive quickly grew, expanding to a four-bay workshop within five years.

The Hertenstein family’s connection to service didn’t end there. Ted Hertenstein Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran, joined the shop in 1988, followed by Michael Hertenstein, who also served in the Air Force and worked at Crown Equipment before joining the DH Automotive family. In 1990, the business moved to its current 5-bay, 5,000-square-foot facility at 507 South Wayne Street in Saint Marys, where it continues to provide trusted automotive care today. In 1994, Ted and Michael officially became full partners, and in January 2023, Ted became the sole owner after Mike retired.
